Where to look for communication in your human design bodygraph:

When looking at communication in relation to human design, we can identify how it’s best expressed by looking at the throat center as well as the unconscious/conscious mercury gates. We can discover the things we’re meant to communicate and our unique style of communication.

The Throat Center:

This is the square center, the 3rd center from the top. The throat center is the center for communication and manifestation. This isn’t manifestation in how we might typically see it described, like with law of attraction. Rather it’s manifestation through expression and action. All of the energy in the bodygraph leads to the throat center, where it can be expressed. So, there’s a lot of pressure from the other centers moving in this direction.

It’s more common for this center to be defined (colored in, closed) because there are 11 gates in the center, so there are many opportunities for definition to occur. 70% of the population have this center defined and 30% have it undefined (not colored in, open).

Defined Throat Center (Closed):

  • Consistent and fixed way of speaking/taking action

  • One unique and reliable way of communicating

  • Their presence can put pressure on those with an undefined throat

Unhealthy:

  • Tries to direct its manifesting energy through the mind

  • Talks too much and does too much

  • Gives their energy away to every impulse

Healthy:

  • Directs its manifesting energy through strategy and authority

  • Uses fixed style of speaking/acting with intention

  • Is discerning about when their energy is expressed

Authentic message comes from what’s connected to the throat. So, the energy that’s moving from the other centers towards the throat, you’ll see this in the form of channels (where two gates are connected between centers).

Undefined Throat Center Human Design

Undefined Throat Center (Open):

  • No consistent way of speaking/taking action

  • Varied forms of communication/expression

  • Can feel pressure to speak in the presence of those with a defined throat

Unhealthy:

  • Speaks incessantly, monopolizes conversation

  • Uncomfortable with silence

  • Focused on planning/controlling what they say

  • Trying to attract attention, be the star

  • May struggle to find their voice

Healthy:

  • Speaks when spoken to, with intention

  • Comfortable with silence

  • Surrenders and trusts the ever-changing nature of their speech

  • Wisdom to know who and what is worthy of attention

  • Samples different ways of communicating, embraces chameleon like nature

  • Can summarize a point

Following strategy and authority = key to healthy and authentic communication

Not Self Question (for when you’re out of alignment with your true self) = Am I still trying to manage the attention I get?

Determining what you’re meant to express through the gates/channels in the throat center:

Human Design Bodygraph

So, we can zoom in even further on the throat center by looking at what gates/channels we have defined. For example, in the sample chart to the left, this person has gates 8, 20, 62 and 23 defined and then channels 20-10, 20-34, 62-17 and 8-1.

  • Channel 8-1 is the channel of inspiration. This channel is all about creative self-expression and contribution to the collective. People with this channel defined will have a knack/strong urge to share their interests, unique insights, perspectives and personal truths. They’re designed to share the things that they’ve found value in with the collective.

  • Channel 62-17 is the channel of organizing. People who have this channel defined are designed to communicate in a way that’s expressed very logical and factual. They have a knack for organizing the details of something complex and presenting it in a more straightforward and understandable manner.

    • This is opposite of channel 56-11 which may communicate the same opinions and ideas but in more of a storytelling way rather than logical. Channel 56-11 is less about the details and more about sharing universal truths and wisdom.

These are just a few examples of how defined gates/channels in the throat center can give you a better understanding of your unique communication style.

Note:

Where there isn’t definition (open centers, gates, channels), we see places where we don’t have consistent access to the gifts/energy of these places of the bodygraph. These areas can be accessed more when we’re in the presence of those who have the center, gate and/or channel defined. These open areas of the bodygraph will also enhance this type of communication in the person who has definition there.

How unique communication shows up in our Mercury gates:

Human Design Bodygraph, Mercury Gates

On the left side of the bodygraph, you’ll see a vertical line of symbols and numbers in red. This represents the position of each of the planets 88 days before the date of this person’s birth, the design side or the unconscious side. On the right side you’ll see a vertical line of symbols and numbers in black. This represents the position of each of the planets on the day of this person’s birth, the personality side or the conscious side.

Here we’re looking at the planet Mercury, the keynote of mercury in Human Design is communication. With this sample I’ve highlighted the unconscious/conscious mercury gates.

Sample Mercury Gates:

  • Unconscious (Design) - 36 -Gate of Crisis - driven by a quest for experience, can be impulsive, leading to emotional chaos and turmoil, creating great potential for empathy developed through a broad range of experiences with intense highs and lows.

  • Conscious (Personality) - 12 -Gate of Caution - Only speak when they feel moved to, not out of social obligation. Have the ability to bring depth, authenticity and emotional clarity. Take time to connect to their emotional landscape to find the right words.

In human design, conscious mercury is expressed through unconscious mercury. So, for this example, this person is able to express with authenticity, intention and emotional clarity because of the vast amount of emotional experiences they’ve had.
